Inspiration

The planting designs of Piet Oudolf

What I love about Piet Oudolf's planting designs is that unlike other planting designers, he does not only focus on the floral display during the Spring and Summer months but creating a design that is beautiful during the Autumn and Winter months. He designs with time as well as with colours and forms.

Piet generally mixes bold perennials with soft grasses in order to create a colourful and eye catching display during Spring and Summer but he considers the forms and textures that these would leave behind during the Autumn and Winter months creating beautiful and stark contrasts.

The drawings of Caitlin Hackett
Caitlin draws pictures that have an undertone that puts me in mind of Grimm fairytales where she mixes typically attractive creatures with an element of death. She shows that death, as a reality, can be beautiful.

Photography by Billy Kidd
Billy Kidd produced a series of photographs of decaying roses. He beautifully captures the captivating colours, forms and textures of roses as they decay.

The Sculptures of Ignacio Canales Aracil
'The Frigility of Time'

Ignacio created sculptures using dried and pressed flowers. This inspired me to dry and press flowers at different stages of decomposition and photograph them in order to create imagery. I have also attempted to produce fabrics by gluing the leaves and petals together.

The photography of Karl Blossfeldt
Karl was a photographer, sculptor and artist who took close up photographs of plants capturing abstract shapes and structures of plants. Karl Blossfeldt's images are very relevant to my work as I am using nature as my main inspiration and through this looking at natural geometry which he has captured perfectly.

As I have chosen to look into more sustainable methods of design, I have researched other designers that have also taken this approach to design.

Stella McCartney

Stella creates luxurious clothes that are easy to wear while promoting vegetarianism, animal rights and supports PETA's anti-fur campaign. (Black, 2012)

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne works to a philosophy of trying to encourage people to buy less and choose well. She challenges the culture of cheap clothing stating that it would be far more sustainable for people to buy well-made clothing which will last through time and through changing fashions. As such, this would counteract the recent wasteful nature of fashion. (Black, 2012)

Miguel Androver

An uncommercial and anti-consumerist designer who creates avante garde garments recycling unusual and discarded materials.

His direction of design is ‘to do something that is not about sales or marketing and through this creates statements about how the soul and imagination is lost in today’s fashion industry.
